United Nations Association Ocean Symposium "The Three Graces" installation
21 November 2024
Thank you to the United Nations Association for inviting me to share my new work at their Ocean Symposium & Marine Exhibition in Sussex in November 2024.
It was such an honour to be in the company of such dedicated ocean supporters, advocates and protectors.
My new work, "The Three Graces," was made for the symposium and exhibited on stage. "The Three Graces" is a series of three wet cyanotype prints on fabric that reinterprets the classical Greek mythological figures (Aglaia, Euphrosyne, and Thalia). Drawing on the symbolism of the Three Graces, traditionally associated with beauty, joy, and abundance, the work reimagines them as female embodiments of the ocean’s bounty and its resilience. Each “Grace”, each cyanotype, represents an aspect of the ocean and its capacity to sustain life. It reframes the Graces as guardians of the ocean, advocating for its protection and regeneration.
Art has the potential to take the vast, sometimes overwhelming science of climate change and translates it into something accessible—something people can feel deeply and carry with them. And it’s that emotional punch that can spark a change in behaviour, a call to action, or even a lifelong dedication to the sea and the environment.
