Plastic Sea, Clean Future: How Art & Action Are Coming Together for Our Coastline

6 April 2025

As I prepare for We Are The Sea, my upcoming solo exhibition for World Ocean Day 2025 (29th May - 9th June), I’ve been thinking a lot about transformation—how we transform materials, stories, and collective energy into something meaningful and lasting.

That’s why I’m thrilled to be partnering with Leave No Trace Brighton, founded by the amazing Coral Evans, for a community beach clean and fundraising collaboration.

🧹 On Sunday 20th April (Easter Sunday), we’ll be gathering together to clean our Brighton coastline. But this isn’t just about removing litter—it’s about making visible what is often ignored. The waste we collect will become part of something bigger:

  • Some of it will be turned into art for the exhibition—layered, textured pieces that reflect both the beauty and fragility of our seas.
  • Other bits will be transformed into artistic mark-making tools, used in an art workshop I’ll be leading at Gallery 19a in June.

This isn’t just an art project—it’s a movement.

FUNDRAISER:

And to help support Leave No Trace Brighton’s work, I’m collaborating with them to run a fundraiser. 🌊 Donate to this fundraiser, and you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win one of my original “Plastic Sea” paintings.

All funds raised go directly to Leave No Trace’s brilliant work cleaning and educating across our coast.

Let’s raise awareness, raise funds, and raise our voices—for the ocean, for each other, and for the future.

💙 Join us. Be the tide.

ABOUT THE PAINTING:

"Plastic Sea: Brighton, East Sussex"

This one-of-a-kind piece is part of my Plastic Sea series and is created on a fragment of sea-worn fibreglass and wood—likely from a broken boat—found and picked up on Brighton Beach after a storm while I was walking my dog.

Using mixed media layered directly onto this salvaged surface, the work captures a painted seascape that speaks both to the beauty of our coastline and the reality of marine pollution. The reverse of the piece holds its own story, revealing details of its origin and transformation.

By donating to our fundraiser for Leave No Trace Brighton, you’ll be entered into a draw to win this original artwork—created not only about the sea, but from it.
