The Water Gave Us Renewal’ began unexpectedly in the studio. After building up thick layers of texture across the surface, sections of material started to dry, crack, and fall away. What first felt like damage or failure quickly became the core idea of the work. The crumbling surface echoed the physical reality of the coastline itself: land shifting, fragmenting, retreating, eroding.

Developing from this moment, the painting became a reflection on coastal erosion, change, and resilience. Seen from an aerial perspective, luminous lines running through the water indicate where the coastline once lay in relation to its current, eroded edge.

While coastal erosion is a natural process, the accelerated rates of change now affecting our coastlines are increasingly linked to climate change and are becoming unsustainable.

Yet the sea remains visually magnificent, commanding, and alive with movement. The Water Gave Us Renewal holds both realities at once: beauty and warning, loss and transformation. Renewal here is not simple restoration, but an invitation to reconsider our relationship with an ever-changing shoreline.
