She Is Shaping Shores

This painting is inspired by drone photography capturing the precise moment of a cliff fall at Peacehaven Cliffs, East Sussex, UK.

The rapid erosion of cliffs along the Sussex coast has accelerated dramatically over the past 200 years. While erosion, rising sea levels, and weathering have been natural processes for millennia, their pace has intensified, likely due to the impacts of climate change. Rising sea levels and increasingly severe storms have expedited the erosion of the Beachy Head and Seaford Head shorelines. The diminishing beaches leave the cliffs vulnerable to the relentless forces of wave action, leading to their collapse into the sea. This cliff erosion is irreversible; once the cliffs retreat, they are lost forever. Current estimates suggest that these cliffs are eroding ten times faster than they have over the past few thousand years.

The painting underscores the interconnectedness of natural processes and the feminine force of our oceans and marine environments. Just as women face unique challenges and bear disproportionate burdens, so too do our coastal landscapes suffer under the manmade burden of climate change. This painting is a call to recognize and address the impacts of our actions on both the environment and the women who are often on the front lines of ecological advocacy. By highlighting the urgent need for environmental justice, this work advocates for a future where the nurturing qualities of both women and nature are honoured and protected.
